Bear attack

Not to worry. We did not get attacked by a bear.

But the bears did a number on the hunting camps. They shredded one tent, broke into oil barrels, leaving the wine glasses intact! To avoid the same disaster this year we replace the tent in June with a sturdy log cabin.

Then again, a curious and hungry bear may even find a way to break into a log cabin. One bear managed to do exactly that in one of the remote camps by digging underneath the cabin and chewing through the plywood floor. The bear then dragged an iron wood stove and other heavy items outside for investigation.

Then, there are other critters that find creative ways to muscle, gnaw, and wiggle their way into a cabin in search of some scraps, even there are only scents or traces left.

It’s beautiful fall weather in Anchorage. It is foggy, rainy, and cold in the mountains, so all the seaplanes are “grounded”.

Departure delay

I wanted to leave today, but I spent a couple of hours on the phone dealing with last minute issues. I am so glad to say good-bye to this world of deadlines, contracts, and obligations, for a while. Trading it all in for a road trip and an Alaskan Summer. So tomorrow, it’s pack and go.

Weather report

Oh it’s warming up. Heat wave! The thermometer is creeping above freezing during the day. Just below freezing at night. I want to see the tundra awaken. Turning green, then a burst of colors from flowers. A few weeks later a turn to fall colors and comes September the white coat is going to return.
A full season in fast forward. I am looking forward to that spectacle.

Some time in the next 2 weeks I’ll be heading North to Alaska. I’ll be spending the Summer as a hiking guide in Denali National Park. Not sure what to expect…

Mosquitoes, bears, and blueberries. That I am counting on. Probably some nasty weather and maybe a few good looks at the Big One.

The more I am reading about Denali, the more I find respect and desire for this tall mountain. On a good day the view from the top must be amazing.

So bear with me, while I get my stuff together for an arctic adventure.
