Summer Farewell – № 3

“Mere color, unspoiled by meaning,
and unallied with definite form,
can speak to the soul
in a thousand different ways. ”

Oscar Wilde

My way of hanging on to summer.

The first storms blew through Southeast Alaska. When the clouds lifted a few mountain tops revealed the first sugar coating. It’s another sign, the season is changing.

Most wildflowers are now in a hurry to produce seeds. Berries, red, blue, and black and lush lichen still paint the alpine tundra in their summer coat. It will all change, soon enough.

Waterfall ~ № 1

There is a waterfall in every dream.

Cool and crystal clear,
it falls gently on the sleeper,
cleansing the mind and soothing the soul.”

Virginia Alison

Time to cleanse the mind and to soothe the soul.

I have spent my days chasing cold hard cash, following the never-ending stream of news, even writing about it (things I cannot change, although still hoping for the butterfly effect).

The days were blending into each other. I settled into a daily routine.

Time for a change.

A word from Socrates

“Strong minds discuss ideas,

average minds discuss events,

weak minds discuss people.”

Socrates

Did Socrates have our media or god forbid our society in mind?

Not to discuss Socrates, here are just a few tidbits about him straight from Wikipedia:

Apparently he never wrote a single phrase. He left it to Plato to tell us about his philosophy.

“I know that I know nothing” is probably the most famous quote attributed to him.

He was morally, intellectually, and politically at odds with many of his fellow Athenians. He told them they were concerned with their families, careers, and political responsibilities when they ought to be worried about the “welfare of their souls”. He believed people should focus on the pursuit of virtue rather than the pursuit of material wealth. What a forward thinking chap.

In the end he was prosecuted and found guilty of both corrupting the minds of the youth of Athens and of impiety. His sentence was death by drinking a mixture containing poison hemlock.

Flowers – № 3

“People from a planet without flowers

would think we must be mad

with joy the whole time

to have such beauty around us.”

Iris Murdoch

Red is the color of my soul according to a silly fun quiz. After a few days without internet I googled for a few hours, rode around town with this incredible manual f/2 135mm lens and found a marvelous garden. The red poppies called at me… And then I found out that the color of my soul is red.

“Red is the color of fire and blood, so it is associated with energy, war, danger, strength, power, determination as well as passion, desire, and love. You are a fireball! Fiesty but warm, you are friendly when handled with care. But the moment someone screws up… Watch out! They might just get burned.”

I might have to retake that test…
